Robin Dodson Tapped for Pharmacy Post at ISU-Meridian

During Robin Dodson’s tenure with Idaho State University, he has served in numerous capacities—including College of Pharmacy faculty member, advisor to ISU President Arthur C. Vailas, ISU-Boise’s chief academic officer and special assistant to Boise’s academic dean.
Come fall, he'll become student services director at the L.S. Skaggs Pharmacy Complex, located at the ISU-Meridian Health Science Center, which will open Aug. 1, north of Interstate-84 between Meridian and Locust Grove roads.

Idaho Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter today helped launch THE CORE (www.thecoreidaho.com), a health care, education and technology enterprise zone that will add new emphasis to Idaho’s Project 60 economic development initiative.
The Governor was joined by Meridian Mayor Tammy de Weerd, Idaho State University President Arthur C. Vailas and dozens of private businesses that operate within an approximately three-mile-long corridor straddling Interstate 84, just minutes from Boise Airport. (read more...)
Children and Young Adults Find Voice at ISU-Boise's AAC Camp

Boise-Strapped into a safety harness with his face beaming, 13 year old Kyle Johnson climbed a rope ladder at Boise's West Family YMCA and Aquatics Center.
His mother, friends and a couple of camp counselors stood 20 feet below on the gym floor, cheering him on.
"He's pretty brave," said Barbara Johnson, Kyle's mom. "It's great to see him interact with his peers."
Kyle, who has cerebral palsy, a neurological disorder that affects body movement and coordination, was one of 22 children and young adults who attended the fourth annual Advancing Adventures in Communicating Camp at Idaho State University-Boise, June 8-12. (read more...)

ISU Institute of Rural Health Awarded $1 Million Grant
to Assist Idahoans Recovering from Traumatic Brain Injuries

The national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates as many as 35,000 Idahoans may be living with a severe traumatic brain injury, yet Idaho has few community resources to assist TBI patients after they leave acute-care facilities and return home to live.
Many patients—with health insurance benefits exhausted and unable to work full time—are left with limited funds to cover immediate needs, such as housing or transportation costs, said Russell Spearman, M.Ed., a senior research associate in the Institute of Rural Health at Idaho State University-Boise.
Under the direction of Spearman, Idaho State University and the IRH have been awarded a $1 million grant by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the Health Resources and Services Administration to develop a support network for TBI patients and their families. A key component is creation of a trust fund to help ease the transition from acute care to independent living. (read more...)
Treasure Valley Inventor is One of Nine Idaho State University Alumni Honored for Professional Achievement

Nine Idaho State University alumni—including a Treasure Valley woman who invented a dental device to enter patient information—will be honored with Professional Achievement Awards at ISU commencement exercises May 9 at Holt Arena in Pocatello.
Rebecca Logue is a 1987 graduate of ISU’s bachelor’s program in dental hygiene, offered through the Kasiska College of Health Professions. Logue is president and founder of Beckmer Products, Inc., based in Meridian, which produces the Dental Remote Access Terminal, a foot-operated computer mouse that dental professionals use to enter patient data and findings into computer software. Pocatello - Idaho State University's new Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Gary A. Olson, began his duties at ISU on April 1.
Olson, a noted scholar of rhetoric and cultural studies and and experienced academic leader, was selected for his post in January, following an extensive national search.

2009 Outstanding Researcher

Five Idaho State University faculty, including ISU-Boise’s Karl Madaras-Kelly, have been named as 2009 Outstanding Researchers and will be honored at a reception in early April. One will receive the 2009 Distinguished Researcher Award at Commencement in Pocatello on May 9.
Madaras-Kelly, a professor of pharmacy, is joined by Jennifer Eastman Attebery, professor and director of the folklore and American studies programs; Terry Bowyer, professor and chair of the Department of Biological Sciences; Russell Wahl, professor and director of the philosophy program; and Maria Wong, associate professor of psychology.
“Idaho State University is extremely fortunate to have faculty with such dedication to world-class research. Our students, faculty, staff, and community benefit from their professional expertise and national recognition,” said Pamela Crowell, ISU vice president for research. (read more...)

Pocatello – Idaho State University has launched its “Be Advised” campaign to encourage students to reap the benefits of good advising prior to registering for fall classes in April.
“Advising is the cornerstone of a successful experience at Idaho State University,” said JoAnn Hertz, director of ISU academic advising. “Interaction with departmental faculty who are experts in their field provides an advantage to any student who seeks it.”
The campaign by the ISU Division of Enrollment Management directs students on how to best pursue the information they need to progress towards attaining their chosen degree program. (read more...)
ISU Institute of Rural Health Hosts
Youth Suicide Prevention Videoconference Series

Idaho State University Institute of Rural Health will host a free Youth Suicide Prevention videoconference series in April focusing on the coroner’s role in working with families of people who commit suicide, coping with the aftermath of suicide, engaging communities and safe messaging in suicide prevention.
The four-week series will be video-cast throughout Idaho starting at 11 a.m. MDT or 10 a.m. PDT. Sites for the videoconferences are located in northern, southern and eastern Idaho. The series is funded with a grant from the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. (read more...)

Meridian - Delta Dental Community Outreach, a philanthropic arm of Delta Dental of Idaho, has donated a $500,000 gift to Idaho State University to help fund an advanced dental residency clinic at ISU’s new health sciences center in Meridian, 1311 E. Central Drive.
“On behalf of Idaho State University and the Idaho Advanced General Dentistry Program, I am honored to accept this generous gift from Delta Dental Community Outreach,” said ISU President Arthur C. Vailas, Ph.D. “This donation will help further our commitment to providing an outstanding education and advanced training for our dental residents. Without the dental residency, many Treasure Valley patients would be unable to afford quality dental care.”
The gift was presented to Vailas by Delta Dental of Idaho Board Chairman Steven Bruce, D.M.D., during a news conference Feb. 27 at the clinic site, which is currently under construction. (read more...)

The Idaho State University Kasiska College of Health Professions Research Day 2009 will be held March 13 in Boise and Pocatello and features keynote speaker Anna Schwartz, Ph.D., author of the book “Cancer Fitness, Exercise Programs for Patients and Survivors.”
The event’s theme is “Data Under Our Noses: Finding, Organizing, and Interpreting.” It runs from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Preregistration is required and can be done at www.isu.edu/kchp/research.
Health care providers, ISU faculty, students and the public are invited to the event that features work accomplished by health researchers across the state. It will be held in the Pond Student Union and the Oboler Library in Pocatello, and at ISU-Boise, 12301 W. Explorer Drive. (read more...)

2009 Special Olympic World Winter Games

Boise - More than 100 Idaho State University faculty, staff and students in Boise and Pocatello were part of the massive volunteer effort ensuring the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Idaho were a success.
Before the Games concluded Feb. 13, ISU health professionals and graduate students had conducted free dental exams, hearing screenings and health assessments on hundreds of athletes through the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes program, created in 1996 to focus attention on health issues facing Special Olympics athletes.
ISU-Boise assistant professor and audiologist, Mel Miller, Ph.D., who was in charge of the Healthy Hearing program for the Games, has been involved with Special Olympics for four years.
“It is a privilege to work with the athletes,” he says, “They teach you so much about courage, joy for life and not letting others define your limitations. They just lift you up.”
An estimated 2,500 athletes from 100 countries participated in the Games.
ISU-Boise Dean Katsilometes Selected as a 2009 Woman of the Year

Boise - Idaho State University-Boise academic dean, Bessie Katsilometes, has been selected an honoree in the Idaho Business Review’s 2009 Idaho Women of the Year program.
She is one of 50 Idaho women who will be featured in the IBR’s annual Women of the Year magazine published March 23 and honored at an awards dinner March 26 at Boise Centre on the Grove. (read more...)
Idaho State University Researchers Attempt to Use Accelerators
To Produce Isotopes for Medical Imaging

Pocatello - Researchers at the Idaho State University Idaho Accelerator Center are experimenting using nuclear accelerators, as opposed to nuclear reactors, to produce medical isotopes used annually for about 20 million medical imaging and treatment procedures in the United States.
If the Idaho State University researchers are successful, southeast Idaho could potentially become an area that could produce medical isotopes commercially to supplement other medical-isotope sources.
“We are pursuing a new way of producing these isotopes that could have implications for the entire nation,” said Doug Wells, director of the ISU Idaho Accelerator Center. “If this works, we’re hoping to grow a local isotope production business that could make southeast Idaho a hub for medical isotope production.” (read more...)
ISU-Boise Family Dentistry Provides Free Dental Care

Boise - Nine-year-old Ethan Larson wore bright green sunglasses with heart-shaped lenses as dentist Tracy Toft, D.D.S., applied a sealant his teeth. Toft wore a purple hat that looked like part of a Renaissance costume.
And who says a trip to the dentist can’t be fun?
Ethan was one of 25 Treasure Valley youngsters who received free dental care Feb. 6 during Give Kids a Smile Day at the ISU Family Dentistry clinic, 2033 E. Summersweet Drive, in Boise.
This is the fourth year the Boise clinic has participated in Give Kids a Smile Day, a national event sponsored by the American Dental Association. The purpose is to educate children and their parents about the importance of good dental care, and to provide dental services for youngsters who have no insurance. (read more...)
